Each serves a distinct physiological role: FSH and LH are pituitary gonadotropins critical for gametogenesis and steroidogenesis; estradiol reflects ovarian follicular activity and estrogenic status; progesterone indicates ovulatory function and luteal phase adequacy; total testosterone evaluates androgen production, particularly relevant in cases of hirsutism, amenorrhea, or suspected hypogonadism; and prolactin, also secreted by the anterior pituitary, modulates lactation and can suppress gonadotropin release when elevated.
The timing and clinical context of testing significantly influence interpretation.
