Effective management begins with identifying underlying contributors. Anatomical factors—including nasal congestion from allergies or chronic rhinitis, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, a deviated septum, or excessive soft tissue in the pharynx—can narrow the upper airway and promote turbulent airflow and vibration of tissues. Lifestyle factors such as obesity, alcohol consumption within three hours of bedtime, sedative use, and supine sleeping position also significantly exacerbate snoring.
First-line interventions focus on behavioral and positional modifications. Weight loss in individuals with excess body weight often yields measurable reductions in snoring severity. CPAP delivers pressurized air via a mask to stent open the upper airway throughout sleep, eliminating both snoring and apneic events.
