While dietary modifications are often first-line interventions, patients frequently seek guidance on specific foods—such as pears—that may alleviate symptoms.
Pears contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, with a medium-sized pear (about 178 g) providing approximately 5.5 grams of total dietary fiber—nearly 20% of the recommended daily intake for adults. The fiber in pears, particularly pectin (a soluble fiber), contributes to stool softening by increasing water retention in the colon. Additionally, pears naturally contain sorbitol, a sugar alcohol with mild osmotic laxative properties that draws water into the intestinal lumen, promoting peristalsis and facilitating transit.
However, while pears can support regularity as part of a balanced, high-fiber diet, they are not a standalone therapeutic intervention for chronic or severe constipation. Clinical evidence does not support pears as a substitute for evidence-based treatments such as increased fluid intake, structured fiber supplementation (e.g., psyllium), or pharmacologic agents when indicated. Moreover, excessive consumption—especially of raw, unpeeled pears—may cause bloating or abdominal discomfort in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome or fructose malabsorption.
Healthcare providers recommend a holistic approach: gradually increasing total dietary fiber to 25–38 g/day, maintaining adequate hydration (≥1.5–2 L of non-caffeinated fluids daily), engaging in regular physical activity, and responding promptly to the urge to defecate. For persistent or new-onset constipation—particularly when accompanied by weight loss, rectal bleeding, or family history of colorectal cancer—prompt medical evaluation is essential to rule out secondary causes including metabolic disorders, structural lesions, or medication-induced effects.
