Blood disorders—also known as hematologic conditions—affect the components of blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and the spleen. These diseases can disrupt oxygen delivery, immune defense, clotting function, or a combination thereof.
Common categories include anemias—such as iron-deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency anemia, and hemolytic anemias like sickle cell disease and thalassemia. Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), such as polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, and myelofibrosis, involve abnormal overproduction of blood cells in the bone marrow.
Leukemias are cancers of the blood-forming tissues, classified by cell lineage (lymphoid or myeloid) and disease tempo (acute or chronic). Lymphomas—including Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin subtypes—are malignancies of lymphocytes that often originate in lymph nodes but may involve bone marrow or extranodal sites. Multiple myeloma is a plasma cell malignancy characterized by clonal proliferation in the bone marrow, monoclonal protein production, and end-organ damage.
