Transmission occurs primarily through direct contact with infected respiratory secretions—such as touching contaminated surfaces (fomites) and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth—or via inhalation of aerosolized droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Individuals are typically most infectious during the first two to three days after symptom onset, although viral shedding can begin up to 24 hours before symptoms appear and persist for several days afterward. The incubation period averages 1–3 days, and the illness itself usually resolves within 7–10 days in otherwise healthy adults.
While rhinovirus infections rarely lead to severe complications in immunocompetent individuals, they may exacerbate underlying conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or cystic fibrosis. In infants, young children, and older adults, rhinovirus infection can occasionally progress to lower respiratory tract involvement, including bronchiolitis or pneumonia.
Preventive measures remain largely behavioral: frequent handwashing with soap and water, avoidance of touching mucosal surfaces with unwashed hands, disinfection of high-touch surfaces, and respiratory hygiene—including covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow. No antiviral therapy is currently approved for routine use against rhinovirus, and vaccines are not available due to the extensive antigenic diversity across over 160 recognized serotypes.
