Polyphagia arises when glucose cannot efficiently enter cells due to insulin deficiency (in type 1 diabetes) or insulin resistance (in type 2 diabetes). As a result, cells become functionally starved despite elevated blood glucose levels. The brain interprets this intracellular energy deficit as a signal to increase food intake, triggering intense and recurrent hunger—even shortly after meals.
Importantly, persistent hunger is not a benign or beneficial sign.
