When an infant develops a fever, many caregivers wonder whether it’s safe to feed them eggs. From a medical standpoint, there is no evidence that consuming eggs worsens fever or interferes with recovery in otherwise healthy infants. Eggs are a nutrient-dense food—rich in high-quality protein, choline, vitamin D, and B vitamins—which can support immune function and tissue repair during illness.
However, several important clinical considerations apply. First, infants under six months of age should not be given eggs—or any solid food—as exclusive breastfeeding or iron-fortified formula remains the sole recommended nutrition source during this period. For infants aged 6–12 months who have already been introduced to complementary foods and have tolerated eggs without signs of allergy (e.g., hives, vomiting, or respiratory distress), eggs may be offered in age-appropriate forms—such as well-cooked egg yolk puree or finely mashed hard-boiled egg—as part of a balanced diet.
Caregivers should avoid giving raw or undercooked eggs due to the risk of Salmonella infection, which could compound illness. Additionally, if the infant is experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms—such as diarrhea, vomiting, or reduced appetite—offering easily digestible foods like breast milk, oral rehydration solution, or bland cereals may be more appropriate than eggs until tolerance improves.
Crucially, fever itself is a symptom—not a disease—and warrants evaluation to identify its underlying cause, such as viral upper respiratory infection, otitis media, or urinary tract infection. Persistent fever (>38.5°C rectally for >24–48 hours), lethargy, poor feeding, decreased urine output, or signs of dehydration require prompt pediatric assessment. Dietary decisions should never delay or replace appropriate medical evaluation and management.
