Recently, a resident of Wuhan, Hubei, Ms. Chen, experienced a sudden and alarming loss of vision in her left eye. This incident occurred after she had been consuming sausages—steamed, fried, and in various other preparations—almost with every meal.
Upon medical examination, it was discovered that Ms. Chen is a diabetic, and her left eye had progressed to the proliferative stage of diabetic retinopathy. The doctors hypothesized that her excessive consumption of sausages may have contributed to this condition. Ms. Chen is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The medical team explained that sausages are high in fat, and consuming large quantities over a short period can lead to unstable blood glucose levels. This instability can exacerbate underlying retinal conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, which can result in severe visual impairment or even blindness if left untreated.
In addition to the specific case of Ms. Chen, the doctors provided broader dietary recommendations for individuals with diabetes. They advised strict control over the intake of carbohydrates and foods high in calories and fats. Instead, they recommended increasing the consumption of proteins and vegetables. Foods like porridge and fried items, which can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, should be avoided.
