Excess fructose—especially from sugar-sweetened beverages, fruit juices, and foods containing high-fructose corn syrup—is metabolized almost exclusively in the liver, where it stimulates de novo lipogenesis and elevates fasting and postprandial triglyceride levels. Whole fruits remain beneficial due to their fiber, antioxidants, and low glycemic load—but juicing removes fiber while concentrating fructose, effectively transforming a healthful food into a metabolic stressor.
Alcohol consumption requires careful evaluation. Ethanol metabolism suppresses mitochondrial β-oxidation in hepatocytes, diverting free fatty acids toward triglyceride synthesis and contributing to hypertriglyceridemia—particularly in susceptible individuals.
