What conditions can be detected by pelvic ultrasound?
Pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive, radiation-free imaging modality that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the anatomy and pathology of the pelvic organs. In women, it evaluates the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and surrounding structures—including the bladder and rectum. It can detect a wide range of conditions, such as uterine fibroids (leiomyomas), endometrial polyps, adenomyosis, ovarian cysts (including functional cysts, endometriomas, and dermoids), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), tubo-ovarian abscesses, and gynecologic malignancies (e.g., endometrial or ovarian cancer—though definitive diagnosis often requires biopsy and further staging). In men, transrectal or transabdominal pelvic ultrasound assesses the prostate, seminal vesicles, and bladder—helping identify benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, prostate cancer (as an initial screening tool), bladder tumors, or post-void residual urine volume. Additionally, pelvic ultrasound is routinely used to guide procedures (e.g., oocyte retrieval, cyst aspiration) and monitor treatment response—for example, tracking fibroid size after medical therapy or assessing endometrial thickness in hormone replacement therapy.
