What causes nerve numbness?
Neuropathic numbness—often described as a sensation of tingling, pins-and-needles, reduced sensitivity, or complete loss of feeling—is typically caused by dysfunction or damage to peripheral nerves. This condition falls under the broader category of peripheral neuropathy, which can arise from numerous underlying etiologies. The pathophysiology involves disruption of normal nerve signaling—either through axonal degeneration, demyelination, or abnormal ion channel function—which impairs sensory transmission from the skin, muscles, and joints to the central nervous system. Symptoms often begin distally (in the feet or hands) and may progress proximally in a “stocking-glove” distribution. Importantly, numbness is not merely a sensory complaint: it increases the risk of unrecognized injury, burns, or ulceration—particularly in patients with diabetic neuropathy—and may coexist with neuropathic pain, muscle weakness, or autonomic disturbances.

Management focuses on treating the underlying condition, optimizing metabolic control, correcting nutritional deficits, discontinuing offending agents, and providing symptomatic relief using evidence-based pharmacotherapies such as gabapentin, pregabalin, duloxetine, or topical capsaicin. Multidisciplinary care—including podiatry, physical therapy, and patient education—is critical for preventing complications and preserving functional independence.
