This process typically begins in the 30s or 40s but varies widely due to genetic factors; some individuals experience early graying (before age 20), while others retain pigment well into their 60s or beyond.
While aging is the most common cause, other factors can accelerate or mimic premature graying. These include certain autoimmune conditions—such as vitiligo or alopecia areata—nutritional deficiencies (notably vitamin B12, copper, iron, or biotin), chronic stress (though the direct mechanistic link remains under investigation), smoking, and rare genetic syndromes like Werner syndrome or Down syndrome. Thyroid dysfunction, particularly hypothyroidism, has also been associated with changes in hair pigmentation.
If you’re noticing a sudden, widespread, or unusually rapid onset of white hair—especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, skin depigmentation, hair loss, or unexplained weight changes—it’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider.
