How soon after conception can a pregnancy test detect pregnancy?
Most over-the-counter pregnancy tests, commonly referred to as home pregnancy tests or urine-based rapid immunoassays, can reliably detect pregnancy approximately 10–14 days after ovulation—typically around the time of a missed menstrual period. This corresponds to about 4 weeks’ gestation when counting from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), which is the standard clinical dating method.
These tests work by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a glycoprotein hormone produced by the syncytiotrophoblast cells of the developing placenta shortly after blastocyst implantation—usually occurring 6–10 days post-ovulation. While some highly sensitive tests claim to detect hCG as low as 10–25 mIU/mL and may yield positive results a few days before the expected period, false-negative results are common if testing too early due to insufficient hCG concentration in urine. For optimal accuracy, it is recommended to test with first-morning urine (which has the highest hCG concentration) and to repeat the test if the result is negative but menstruation remains absent.
If clinical confirmation is needed—such as in cases of suspected ectopic pregnancy, recurrent miscarriage, or uncertain test results—quantitative serum β-hCG measurement and transvaginal ultrasound are the gold-standard diagnostic tools. Serum hCG can be detected as early as 7–8 days after ovulation, and an intrauterine gestational sac is typically visualized via ultrasound by approximately 5 weeks’ gestation (or when serum hCG exceeds 1,500–2,000 mIU/mL).
