Over time, with aging and cumulative sun exposure, these transient lines may become static—persistently visible even at rest—due to collagen and elastin degradation in the dermis, reduced skin elasticity, and volume loss in the underlying subcutaneous tissue.
Several factors contribute to their development and prominence. Chronic ultraviolet (UV) radiation accelerates photoaging, impairing fibroblast function and diminishing extracellular matrix integrity. Repetitive facial movements, especially in individuals with expressive habits or those who frequently wear ill-fitting eyewear (which can cause pressure-related creasing), may also deepen nasofrontal folds. Additionally, genetic predisposition, skin thickness, and hormonal changes—particularly estrogen decline in perimenopausal and postmenopausal individuals—can influence both onset and progression.
While nasal furrows are generally benign and reflect normal physiologic aging, sudden or asymmetric appearance warrants clinical evaluation to rule out neurologic conditions (e.g., facial nerve dysfunction), connective tissue disorders, or localized inflammatory processes. Management options range from preventive measures—including daily broad-spectrum sunscreen use and avoidance of excessive squinting—to cosmetic interventions such as topical retinoids, neuromodulators (e.g., onabotulinumtoxinA injected into the procerus muscle), or energy-based devices like fractional laser resurfacing for more established lines.
