Newborns spend the majority of their day sleeping—up to 16–18 hours—but their sleep is characteristically fragmented and light. This pattern is entirely normal and reflects the immaturity of their central nervous system and developing circadian rhythm.
One key factor is the predominance of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which accounts for approximately 50% of a newborn’s total sleep time—compared with only 20–25% in adults. REM sleep is associated with heightened brain activity, irregular breathing, occasional twitches, and easier arousal. Because newborns cycle more frequently between sleep stages—and spend less time in deep, restorative non-REM (NREM) sleep—they awaken readily in response to environmental stimuli such as noise, temperature shifts, or hunger.
Physiological immaturity also plays a role: underdeveloped neural pathways limit the infant’s ability to sustain prolonged periods of quiet, consolidated sleep. Additionally, newborns have small gastric capacity and high metabolic demands, necessitating feeding every 2–3 hours—even overnight—which naturally interrupts sleep continuity.
It is important to note that this sleep architecture supports critical neurodevelopmental processes, including synaptic pruning, memory consolidation, and sensory integration. As the infant matures over the first few months, REM sleep gradually decreases while NREM sleep—particularly slow-wave sleep—increases, paving the way for longer, more stable sleep bouts.
Parents should be reassured that frequent waking is not indicative of a disorder but rather a hallmark of healthy neonatal development. Consistent, responsive caregiving—including swaddling, gentle rocking, and maintaining a calm, dim environment—can support physiological regulation without altering the natural trajectory of sleep maturation.
