Symptoms such as excessive crying, fussiness, abdominal distension, clenched fists, and drawing up of the legs often emerge between 2 and 4 weeks of age. These manifestations peak around 6 weeks and gradually diminish by 3 to 4 months, coinciding with maturation of the infant’s digestive system and nervous regulation of gut motility.
This pattern reflects normal developmental physiology rather than pathology. The immature gastrointestinal tract in early infancy has reduced enzymatic activity, slower transit time, and heightened visceral sensitivity—all contributing to transient gas accumulation and discomfort. Breastfed infants may experience fluctuations related to maternal diet or feeding technique, while formula-fed infants may be affected by lactose intolerance or protein sensitivity—but true pathological causes are rare and must be distinguished from benign functional gas.
