Clinically, quantitative serum hCG testing is used not only to confirm pregnancy but also to assess gestational viability. Serial measurements—typically repeated every 48 to 72 hours in early pregnancy—help evaluate embryonic development: in a healthy intrauterine pregnancy, hCG levels generally double approximately every 48–72 hours during the first 6–7 weeks. Abnormal patterns—such as plateauing, slow rise, or decline—may indicate complications including ectopic pregnancy, impending miscarriage, or blighted ovum.
Beyond obstetrics, hCG testing plays a critical role in diagnosing and monitoring certain trophoblastic diseases (e.g., hydatidiform mole, choriocarcinoma) and select non-trophoblastic malignancies, including germ cell tumors of the testis or ovary.
