Symptoms of Bronchial Lung Cancer

Bronchogenic carcinoma—commonly referred to as lung cancer—often presents with nonspecific symptoms that may be mistaken for benign respiratory conditions, especially in early stages. Persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, and progressive dyspnea are among the most frequent initial manifestations. Hemoptysis, though less common, is a clinically significant red flag warranting urgent evaluation.

Systemic symptoms—including fatigue, anorexia, and night sweats—may accompany local pulmonary signs such as wheezing, stridor, or diminished breath sounds due to airway obstruction or parenchymal infiltration. Paraneoplastic syndromes, including hypercalcemia (often secondary to PTHrP secretion), syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), and Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, occur in a subset of patients and may precede radiographic evidence of tumor.

Metastatic disease contributes substantially to symptom burden: bone pain suggests osseous involvement; headache, seizures, or focal neurologic deficits raise concern for brain metastases; and unilateral facial edema or distended neck veins may indicate superior vena cava syndrome—a potentially life-threatening oncologic emergency.

Because early-stage disease is frequently asymptomatic, clinicians emphasize risk-based screening—particularly low-dose chest CT for high-risk individuals, such as current or former heavy smokers aged 50–80 years. A high index of suspicion, coupled with timely imaging and tissue confirmation, remains critical for diagnosis and staging.
