Drinking excessive amounts of water in a short period—often referred to colloquially as “drinking until you’re full” or “water intoxication”—is not beneficial for gastric health and can pose serious medical risks.
The stomach is designed to accommodate variable volumes of food and liquid, but its capacity is finite—typically around 1 to 1.5 liters in healthy adults. Rapidly consuming large volumes of water overwhelms normal gastric emptying mechanisms, leading to gastric distension. This can cause acute discomfort, nausea, early satiety, and even transient impairment of lower esophageal sphincter function, potentially contributing to gastroesophageal reflux.
More critically, overhydration disrupts systemic electrolyte balance—particularly sodium—resulting in hyponatremia. When plasma sodium falls below 135 mmol/L, neurological symptoms such as headache, confusion, lethargy, and in severe cases, seizures or coma may occur. This condition, known as exercise-associated or dilutional hyponatremia, has been documented in endurance athletes and individuals engaging in compulsive water-drinking behaviors.
Gastric motility may also be transiently suppressed by acute fluid overload, delaying gastric emptying and interfering with coordinated digestive signaling. While the stomach itself does not sustain permanent structural damage from isolated episodes of overhydration, repeated mechanical stress and electrolyte disturbances may contribute to dyspeptic symptoms or exacerbate underlying functional gastrointestinal disorders.
Clinical guidelines recommend individualized fluid intake based on thirst, activity level, climate, and renal function—not fixed volume targets. For most healthy adults, total daily water intake (from beverages and food) averages 2–3 liters, with no physiological benefit—and clear risk—in exceeding this without medical indication or supervision.
