For infants and young children, clinicians often perform the examination while the child is held comfortably on a parent’s lap or lying supine. Pupillary dilation with topical mydriatic drops (e.g., cyclopentolate or tropicamide) may be used to enhance visualization, especially during comprehensive screening. While the drops may cause brief stinging or blurred vision and light sensitivity, they do not induce pain.
