While TCM practitioners may associate spontaneous or night sweats with kidney yin deficiency, modern clinical evaluation prioritizes evidence-based causes.
Medically, hyperhidrosis—the clinical term for excessive sweating—is most commonly primary (idiopathic), often beginning in adolescence and affecting palms, soles, axillae, or face. Secondary hyperhidrosis, however, may signal underlying conditions such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, pheochromocytoma, infections (e.g., tuberculosis), lymphoma, or autonomic neuropathy. Certain medications—including antidepressants, opioids, and cholinergic agents—can also induce diaphoresis.

In summary, attributing excessive sweating solely to “kidney deficiency” risks overlooking treatable medical conditions. Accurate diagnosis hinges on integrating clinical history, physical examination, and targeted laboratory investigation—not on syndromic labels from alternative frameworks. Evidence-informed management—ranging from topical anticholinergics and iontophoresis to systemic therapies or surgical intervention—remains the standard of care for persistent hyperhidrosis.
