Begin with gentle cleansing: use lukewarm (not hot) water and fragrance-free, soap-free cleansers with a pH close to skin’s natural range (4.5–5.5). Avoid scrubbing or prolonged bathing—limit showers to under 10 minutes. Harsh surfactants, alcohol-based products, and exfoliants should be avoided, as they disrupt lipid lamellae and compromise barrier integrity.
Immediately after patting skin dry—never rubbing—apply a thick, occlusive moisturizer. Opt for formulations containing ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids in physiologic ratios (e.g., 3:1:1), which mimic the skin’s native lipid matrix.
