Novo Nordisk (China) Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Shuyu Pingmin Pharmacy Chain Co., Ltd. have announced a strategic collaboration to advance comprehensive, pharmacy-based obesity management in China—marking a significant step toward integrating GLP-1 receptor agonists into routine community-level metabolic care.
The partnership, formalized during a high-level summit in Jinan, centers on the clinical application of semaglutide—a once-weekly glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) approved in China for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight accompanied by at least one weight-related comorbidity. Both organizations affirmed a shared commitment to redefining obesity not as a cosmetic concern but as a complex, chronic metabolic disease requiring longitudinal, multidisciplinary intervention.
Shuyu Pingmin—among the largest retail pharmacy chains in Shandong Province and a national leader in chronic disease support—brings extensive infrastructure for patient-centered care: over 4,000 stores equipped with self-service monitoring devices for blood pressure, glucose, and lipid profiles; certified specialty pharmacies for high-cost therapies (DTP pharmacies); and an established CRM platform supporting longitudinal health recordkeeping for more than 10 million members. Its “three highs” (hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia) management model now expands explicitly to obesity, reflecting evolving clinical guidelines and national public health priorities under the “Healthy China 2030” initiative.
Novo Nordisk, with over a century of expertise in serious chronic diseases and three decades of dedicated obesity research, emphasized its role in advancing evidence-based pharmacotherapy and holistic lifestyle integration. The company underscored that effective obesity treatment extends beyond medication—it requires coordinated nutritional counseling, physical activity guidance, behavioral support, and continuous clinical monitoring. Under this collaboration, Novo Nordisk will provide scientific training, clinical decision-support tools, and therapeutic education resources to Shuyu Pingmin’s pharmacist network.
Critical to the initiative is the development of a closed-loop metabolic health service model—spanning patient registration, risk stratification, prescription validation, administration training, adverse event management, biometric tracking, and ongoing health coaching. For patients initiating semaglutide, Shuyu Pingmin pharmacists will deliver personalized, one-on-one support including injection technique instruction, dose titration guidance, and real-time management of gastrointestinal side effects—common early challenges that often undermine adherence.
Digital health integration forms another cornerstone: patients’ weight trajectories, glycemic metrics, blood pressure readings, and lipid panels will be captured via Shuyu Pingmin’s secure digital platform, enabling dynamic treatment evaluation and timely clinical escalation when needed. Complementing pharmacotherapy, pharmacists will co-develop individualized lifestyle interventions—tailoring dietary patterns, movement prescriptions, and sleep hygiene strategies based on each patient’s metabolic profile, comorbidities, and psychosocial context.
Both parties also committed to scalable health literacy efforts—including hybrid (online and in-store) patient education sessions, peer-support forums, and clinician-facing webinars—to strengthen understanding of obesity pathophysiology, reduce stigma, and improve long-term engagement with therapy. “This isn’t just about dispensing a medication,” said Cai Hua, Vice President of Novo Nordisk’s Retail Business Unit in China. “It’s about building trust, continuity, and clinical accountability at the community level—where most patients begin—and ensuring that innovation translates into measurable, sustained health outcomes.”

The collaboration signals a broader industry shift: from transactional pharmacy models to integrated, value-based metabolic health ecosystems. With plans to expand AI-assisted risk prediction tools, optimize supply chain logistics for temperature-sensitive injectables, and co-develop standardized protocols for retail-based obesity care, the partnership aims to set a replicable benchmark for how innovative therapeutics can be effectively operationalized across China’s decentralized healthcare landscape.
