Pre-Procedure Dietary Preparation
Optimal gastric visualization requires complete gastric emptying. Patients scheduled for morning gastroscopy should consume only clear liquids after dinner the prior evening and fast—including water—after 10 p.m. For afternoon procedures, a light, low-residue breakfast (e.g., clear broth or diluted apple juice) is permissible, but all oral intake must cease at least six hours before the exam. Solid foods, high-fiber items (e.g., celery, leeks), pigmented fruits (e.g., tomatoes, watermelon), and dairy products should be avoided for 24 hours prior, as residual fibers, dyes, or mucus may obscure mucosal detail or mimic pathology. Medication Management and Medical History Disclosure

Post-Procedure Recovery and Monitoring
Following the exam, local anesthetic spray causes transient pharyngeal numbness. Patients must refrain from eating or drinking for at least 30–60 minutes—or until the gag reflex fully returns—to prevent aspiration. A cautious progression from small sips of water to clear liquids is recommended once swallowing is confirmed safe. Mild sore throat, bloating, or nausea may occur but usually resolve within 24 hours. However, any new-onset severe abdominal pain, hematemesis, melena, or fever warrants urgent medical evaluation, as these may indicate perforation, significant bleeding, or infection. Patients who received sedation must arrange for a responsible adult to accompany them home and avoid driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions for at least 12–24 hours.
