What causes frequent urination in women?

Experiencing frequent urges to urinate—especially when accompanied by little or no urine output, urgency, or discomfort—is a common symptom that can stem from several underlying causes. In women, the most frequent contributors include urinary tract infections (UTIs), overactive bladder syndrome (OAB), and pelvic floor dysfunction. UTIs, particularly cystitis, are especially prevalent due to the shorter female urethra, which facilitates bacterial ascent into the bladder; symptoms often include dysuria (painful urination), suprapubic pressure, and cloudy or foul-smelling urine. Less common but important considerations include interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (characterized by chronic pelvic pain and urinary frequency without infection), urolithiasis (bladder or urethral stones), vaginal atrophy (especially postmenopausal estrogen deficiency), and, rarely, bladder tumors or neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury. A thorough evaluation—including detailed history, physical examination (including pelvic exam), urinalysis, urine culture, and possibly urodynamic testing or pelvic ultrasound—is essential to determine the precise etiology and guide appropriate, individualized management.
