Glucose test strips are essential tools for individuals managing diabetes, enabling accurate, real-time monitoring of blood glucose levels at home. These disposable, enzyme-coated strips work in conjunction with a compatible glucose meter: when a small drop of capillary blood is applied, glucose oxidase and peroxidase enzymes catalyze a reaction that generates an electrical current or color change proportional to the glucose concentration. The meter then converts this signal into a numerical reading (in mg/dL or mmol/L).
Proper handling is critical for reliability. Strips must be stored in their original, tightly sealed container at room temperature—avoiding exposure to heat, humidity, direct sunlight, or refrigeration, which can degrade the enzyme layer. Always check the expiration date before use, and never reuse strips or share them between individuals. Contamination from dirt, lotions, or residual sugar on fingers can falsely elevate readings, so thorough handwashing and drying prior to testing is mandatory.
Accuracy may also be affected by hematocrit extremes (e.g., severe anemia or polycythemia), certain medications (such as high-dose vitamin C or acetaminophen), oxygen therapy, or abnormal blood analytes like uric acid or triglycerides. For clinical decision-making—especially during illness, hypoglycemia symptoms, or when results seem inconsistent—confirmatory laboratory plasma glucose testing is recommended. Regular calibration (if required by the device) and routine meter maintenance further support consistent performance.
