Which Medical Specialty Should You Visit for Tracheal and Lung Issues?

When experiencing symptoms related to the trachea or lungs—such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), stridor, or recurrent respiratory infections—the appropriate first point of contact is typically the Department of Respiratory Medicine.

Respiratory medicine specialists are internists with advanced training in diagnosing and managing disorders of the upper and lower airways, pulmonary parenchyma, pleura, and associated vasculature. Conditions they routinely evaluate include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, infectious pneumonias, and tracheal stenosis or inflammation.

In cases where structural abnormalities, tumors, or trauma involving the trachea or major airways are suspected—particularly if imaging reveals a mass, narrowing, or extrinsic compression—a referral to Thoracic Surgery may follow for further evaluation and potential intervention.
