Ski boots are rigid, form-fitting shells designed to transfer precise movements from the skier’s foot to the ski. As such, what’s worn inside them matters significantly.
Skiers should wear thin, moisture-wicking socks made from synthetic blends (e.g., polyester, nylon) or merino wool. These materials efficiently pull sweat away from the skin, reduce friction, and maintain consistent insulation—even when damp. Cotton socks are strongly discouraged: they absorb and retain moisture, increasing the risk of blisters, frostnip, and impaired circulation.
Fit is paramount. Socks should be snug but not constricting—no wrinkles, bunching, or excess material at the toes or heel. Overly thick or double-layered socks compromise boot fit, restrict blood flow, and diminish control by creating slack between foot and shell. Many high-performance ski socks feature anatomical shaping, targeted cushioning (minimal in the forefoot and heel, slightly enhanced in pressure zones), and seamless toe closures to further minimize irritation.
It’s essential to break in both boots and socks together before hitting challenging terrain. A poorly fitting sock-boot combination can contribute to common overuse injuries—including metatarsalgia, Achilles tendinopathy, and anterior ankle impingement—by altering natural biomechanics or promoting compensatory movement patterns.
