What to Prepare Before Your Baby Arrives

Preparing for a newborn involves thoughtful planning to ensure both the baby’s safety and the family’s readiness for the transition into parenthood. Essential items fall into several key categories: nursery setup, feeding supplies, clothing and hygiene essentials, safety equipment, and documentation.

A safe sleep environment is paramount. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a firm, flat crib mattress covered only with a fitted sheet—no pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, or bumper pads. A bassinet or co-sleeper that meets current Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards may be used for the first few months, but the infant should always sleep on their back in a separate sleep space, ideally in the parents’ room for at least the first six months.

Feeding supplies depend on the chosen method. For breastfeeding, a supportive nursing bra, high-quality breast pump (manual or electric), milk storage bags or containers, and lanolin-based nipple cream are practical additions. For formula feeding, parents need FDA-approved infant formula, sterilized bottles, nipples appropriate for the baby’s age, and a bottle brush set. Regardless of feeding method, a comfortable, quiet feeding area with proper back support is highly recommended.

Clothing should prioritize soft, breathable fabrics like 100% cotton. Newborns typically wear onesies, sleep sacks (to replace loose blankets), and layered outfits adaptable to room temperature. Diapering essentials include either disposable or cloth diapers, fragrance-free wipes, a changing pad with secure straps, and a gentle, hypoallergenic diaper rash ointment containing zinc oxide.

Safety extends beyond the nursery. A rear-facing infant car seat—certified to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 and properly installed using either LATCH or seat belt—is mandatory for every car ride, from the hospital discharge onward. Parents should also install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in or near sleeping areas and consider a baby monitor with audio or video capability for added peace of mind.

Finally, administrative preparation is critical. Families should complete hospital registration well before the due date, confirm insurance coverage for maternity and newborn care, and begin assembling required documents—including birth certificate forms, Social Security number application, and pediatrician enrollment paperwork. Scheduling the newborn’s first pediatric visit within 48–72 hours after hospital discharge supports early identification of potential health concerns such as jaundice, feeding difficulties, or weight loss patterns.
