Among commonly explored complementary approaches, certain teas have drawn clinical and epidemiological interest for their potential antihypertensive effects. However, it is essential to emphasize that no tea replaces prescribed antihypertensive medications, nor should it be used as a substitute for evidence-based medical care.
Green tea is the most extensively studied in this context. Its bioactive compounds—particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a potent polyphenol—have demonstrated vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and endothelial-protective properties in preclinical and some human trials. Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials suggest modest but statistically significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure with regular green tea consumption (typically 3–5 cups daily over 3–6 months), though effect sizes vary widely depending on baseline blood pressure, dosage, and preparation method.
Hibiscus tea (made from dried calyces of *Hibiscus sabdariffa*) has also shown promise. Clinical studies indicate that consuming 240–480 mL of hibiscus infusion twice daily may lower systolic blood pressure by approximately 7–10 mmHg in individuals with stage 1 hypertension. The mechanism appears linked to angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition and nitric oxide–mediated vasodilation. Caution is warranted in patients taking ACE inhibitors or other antihypertensives due to potential additive effects.
Oolong tea, a partially fermented variety rich in theasinensins and catechins, has yielded mixed but generally favorable results in small-scale trials. Some studies report modest BP-lowering effects after 6–12 weeks of consistent intake, though robust large-scale data remain limited.
It is equally important to note contraindications and interactions. Black tea—despite its flavonoid content—contains higher levels of caffeine, which may transiently elevate blood pressure, particularly in caffeine-naïve or sensitive individuals. Herbal infusions such as licorice root tea must be avoided entirely in hypertensive patients due to glycyrrhizin-induced mineralocorticoid excess, leading to sodium retention, hypokalemia, and worsening hypertension.
Ultimately, tea selection should be individualized, integrated into an overall heart-healthy pattern—including sodium restriction, potassium adequacy, physical activity, and weight management—and discussed with a healthcare provider—especially for those on antihypertensive regimens—to prevent unintended pharmacodynamic interactions or delays in guideline-directed treatment.
