What Is Levalbuterol Nebulizer Solution?

Levosalbutamol inhalation solution is a bronchodilator medication used in the management of reversible airway obstruction, particularly in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is the purified (R)-enantiomer of salbutamol—a selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist that acts by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle, thereby improving airflow and reducing symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.

Unlike racemic salbutamol—which contains equal parts of both (R)- and (S)-enantiomers—levosalbutamol delivers only the pharmacologically active (R)-enantiomer. This enantiomeric purity may contribute to enhanced bronchodilatory efficacy and potentially reduced side effects, including tachycardia, tremor, and hypokalemia, compared with the racemic formulation.

The solution is administered via nebulization, allowing direct delivery of the drug to the lower respiratory tract. It is indicated for acute bronchospasm relief and, in some clinical settings, for maintenance therapy under close medical supervision. Dosing must be individualized based on patient age, severity of airflow limitation, and response to treatment.

Contraindications include hypersensitivity to levosalbutamol or any component of the formulation. Caution is warranted in patients with cardiovascular disorders, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, or seizure disorders. As with all short-acting beta-2 agonists, overuse may signal worsening underlying disease and is associated with increased risk of severe exacerbations and mortality.
