Cockroaches are highly adaptable scavengers drawn to environments that fulfill their basic survival needs: food, water, shelter, and warmth. Unlike many pests, they do not seek out specific foods but rather respond to volatile organic compounds emitted by decomposing or fermenting organic matter—such as sugars, starches, proteins, and fats. Common attractants include crumbs, spilled beverages (especially sugary or alcoholic ones), pet food left out overnight, grease residues on stovetops or in cabinets, and improperly sealed garbage.
Moisture is equally critical: cockroaches require regular access to water and are strongly attracted to leaky pipes, condensation around refrigerators or dishwashers, damp basements, and even high indoor humidity levels above 60%. They thrive in temperatures between 70°F and 85°F (21°C–29°C), making heated indoor spaces—particularly kitchens and bathrooms—ideal habitats year-round.
Clutter and structural vulnerabilities further increase risk. Cracks in walls or flooring, gaps around utility lines, poorly sealed windows and doors, and accumulations of cardboard boxes or paper provide both entry points and harborage sites where cockroaches can hide, breed, and avoid detection. Notably, German cockroaches—the most common indoor species in temperate climates—exhibit strong thigmotactic behavior, preferring tight, dark crevices where their bodies contact surfaces on multiple sides.
Interestingly, cockroaches are also drawn to certain human-associated odors beyond food waste—including the scent of human skin flakes (desquamated keratinocytes), sweat residues, and even some personal care products containing fatty acids or esters. This explains why infestations often persist near sleeping areas or within furniture upholstery, even in seemingly clean homes.
