Abdominal distension, failure to pass meconium within 48 hours, and progressive abdominal tenderness are additional red flags for conditions like Hirschsprung disease, meconium ileus, or intestinal atresia.
Other notable signs include recurrent episodes of intestinal obstruction—characterized by colicky abdominal pain, vomiting, and constipation—which may point to anomalies such as Meckel diverticulum, duplications, or strictures. In cases involving vascular compromise—such as in midgut volvulus or internal hernias—patients may develop signs of acute abdomen, including bilious emesis, abdominal rigidity, and hematochezia, necessitating urgent surgical evaluation.
