Mechanical approaches—including shaving, tweezing, waxing, and epilation—remove hair at or just below the skin surface and provide temporary results, typically lasting from a few days to several weeks. Chemical depilatories dissolve keratin in the hair shaft via alkaline agents such as calcium thioglycolate or strontium sulfide, offering short-term efficacy but carrying risks of irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin.
For longer-lasting reduction, energy-based devices are increasingly utilized. Intense pulsed light (IPL) systems deliver broad-spectrum non-coherent light absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle, inducing thermal injury to the germinative cells of the anagen phase. Laser hair removal—using monochromatic, coherent light sources such as alexandrite (755 nm), diode (800–810 nm), or Nd:YAG (1064 nm) lasers—offers greater specificity and penetration depth. Efficacy is highest in individuals with dark, coarse hair and light skin (Fitzpatrick skin types I–III); however, advances in longer-wavelength lasers and cooling technologies have expanded safe use to darker skin tones (types IV–VI).
Electrolysis remains the only FDA-cleared method for permanent hair removal. While highly effective for small areas and all hair/skin types, it is time-intensive, requires skilled practitioners, and carries risks of scarring or pigmentary changes if improperly performed.
Topical agents such as eflornithine hydrochloride 13.9% cream inhibit ornithine decarboxylase—an enzyme critical for hair matrix cell proliferation—slowing hair growth but not eliminating existing hairs. It is FDA-approved for facial hirsutism in women and is often used adjunctively with other modalities.
