Ba Ji Tian (Morinda officinalis), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is commonly processed with salt to enhance its therapeutic properties. This preparation, known as “salt-processed Ba Ji Tian,” is widely used in clinical practice for its tonifying effects on the kidney and liver meridians.
Pharmacologically, salt processing increases the herb’s affinity for the kidney channel and augments its ability to nourish kidney yang and strengthen tendons and bones. Clinically, it is indicated for patterns of kidney yang deficiency—manifesting as lower back and knee soreness, fatigue, cold limbs, impotence, premature ejaculation, and frequent or clear urination. Modern research suggests that Morinda officinalis contains iridoid glycosides (e.g., monotropein), oligosaccharides, and anthraquinones, which may contribute to anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild androgenic activities.
Contraindications include use in individuals with yin deficiency–fire exuberance (e.g., symptoms such as night sweats, tidal fever, red tongue with scant coating, and rapid pulse), damp-heat syndromes (e.g., yellow greasy tongue coating, urinary burning or urgency), or hypertension uncontrolled by medication.
