The blue light emitted by screens may disrupt melatonin secretion, contributing to delayed sleep onset, reduced total sleep duration, and fragmented sleep architecture—all of which impair memory consolidation and executive function.
Orthopedic specialists have documented an increasing prevalence of “text neck,” a postural syndrome involving chronic cervical flexion that leads to upper trapezius muscle strain, facet joint irritation, and early-onset degenerative changes in the cervical spine. Concurrently, sedentary screen time displaces physical activity, correlating with higher body mass index (BMI), reduced cardiorespiratory fitness, and increased risk of insulin resistance—even in prepubertal children.
Neurodevelopmental research indicates that habitual, unstructured smartphone engagement—especially passive scrolling or rapid content switching—may weaken attentional control and reduce gray matter volume in prefrontal cortical regions associated with impulse regulation and working memory.
