Initial assessment typically includes a detailed history focusing on sleep patterns, physical activity levels, nutritional intake, mental health status, and medication use. Laboratory testing may be warranted to rule out common contributors such as iron deficiency anemia, vitamin D or B12 deficiency, thyroid dysfunction (e.g., hypothyroidism), uncontrolled diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
Lifestyle interventions form the cornerstone of fatigue management for many patients. Evidence supports consistent, high-quality sleep—aiming for 7–9 hours per night—with attention to sleep hygiene, including regular bedtimes, minimizing screen exposure before bedtime, and avoiding caffeine or heavy meals late in the day. Regular moderate-intensity aerobic exercise—such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming—for at least 150 minutes weekly has been shown to improve energy metabolism and reduce perceived fatigue, even in individuals with chronic conditions like cancer-related fatigue or post-viral syndromes.
Nutritional optimization is equally critical. Hydration status must also be assessed, as even mild dehydration can impair cognitive function and physical endurance.
