A detectable fetal heartbeat is paramount: Doppler or transvaginal ultrasound should demonstrate a regular cardiac rhythm with a rate between 120–160 beats per minute. The presence of embryonic motion, though subtle, further supports normal neuromuscular development.
Structural assessment via high-resolution transvaginal ultrasound may reveal early but recognizable features—including a developing brain vesicle, limb buds, and early facial structures—though detailed anatomical survey is not yet feasible. Absence of concerning findings—such as an empty gestational sac, absent or irregular cardiac activity, or significantly discordant CRL—is equally important in confirming viability.
Maternal factors also contribute contextually: stable vital signs, absence of vaginal bleeding or severe cramping, and appropriate rise in serum beta-hCG and progesterone levels support ongoing healthy implantation and placental function. However, biochemical markers alone are insufficient for definitive assessment and must be interpreted alongside imaging.
