After undergoing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for urinary tract stones, patients typically require a brief recovery period—usually 1 to 2 days of relative rest. During this time, light activity is encouraged to support stone fragment passage, but strenuous physical exertion, heavy lifting, and high-impact exercise should be avoided for at least 3 to 5 days post-procedure. Individual recovery timelines may vary depending on stone burden, treatment intensity, and patient-specific factors such as age, renal function, and comorbidities.

Most patients can resume routine daily activities—including desk-based work—within 24 to 48 hours. However, clinicians routinely advise continued hydration (2–3 liters of water per day), strain of all urine to monitor fragment clearance, and prompt reporting of signs of complications such as persistent flank pain, fever, chills, or gross hematuria lasting beyond 48 hours. Follow-up imaging—often non-contrast CT or renal ultrasound—is typically scheduled within 2 to 4 weeks to assess residual fragments and confirm stone-free status.

It is important to note that ESWL does not eliminate the underlying metabolic or anatomical risk factors for stone recurrence. Therefore, post-procedural evaluation—including 24-hour urine metabolic profiling and serum electrolyte assessment—is strongly recommended to guide long-term preventive strategies.
