Mild, non-inflammatory effusions—such as those following minor trauma or overuse—may resolve spontaneously within 3 to 7 days with conservative management, including rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). In contrast, effusions caused by inflammatory conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis often persist longer and typically require targeted medical intervention, such as intra-articular corticosteroid injection or systemic anti-inflammatory therapy.
Septic arthritis—a medical emergency—presents with rapid-onset, painful swelling, warmth, and systemic signs of infection; it does not self-resolve and necessitates urgent antibiotic treatment and possible joint aspiration or surgical drainage. Similarly, hemarthrosis (blood in the joint), frequently resulting from ligamentous or meniscal injury, may take 1–2 weeks to reabsorb but warrants imaging and orthopedic evaluation to rule out structural damage.
