There is no credible scientific evidence to support the claim that cassia seed (Cassia obtusifolia or Cassia tora), commonly known as “jue ming zi” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), possesses anthelmintic—i.e., parasitic worm–expelling—activity. While cassia seed has been historically used in TCM for its purported liver- and eye-benefiting properties—particularly for conditions involving liver fire excess or yin deficiency with ascending yang—its traditional applications do not include deworming.
Modern pharmacological studies have identified bioactive compounds in cassia seed, including anthraquinones (e.g., emodin, chrysophanol), flavonoids (e.g., quercetin, kaempferol), and polysaccharides. These constituents are associated with mild laxative, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential hypolipidemic effects. However, none have demonstrated clinically relevant efficacy against intestinal helminths such as Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, or hookworms in preclinical or clinical research.
In contrast, evidence-based anthelmintic agents—including albendazole, mebendazole, pyrantel pamoate, and ivermectin—are rigorously validated for safety and efficacy against specific parasitic infections. Their mechanisms of action (e.g., microtubule disruption, neuromuscular paralysis) are well characterized and supported by randomized controlled trials and global public health guidelines.
Clinicians should advise patients against using cassia seed—or any unvalidated herbal product—as a substitute for proven antiparasitic therapy. Self-treatment may delay appropriate diagnosis and management, particularly in endemic regions or in cases presenting with eosinophilia, abdominal pain, or nutritional deficiencies suggestive of helminthiasis.
