Can Lianmei Eye Patches Treat Myopia?

There is currently no scientific evidence to support the claim that “Lianmei Eye Patches” or similar over-the-counter ocular adhesive patches can treat or reverse myopia (nearsightedness). Myopia is a refractive error caused primarily by axial elongation of the eyeball or excessive corneal/lens curvature, resulting in light focusing in front of the retina rather than directly on it. Effective, evidence-based interventions include corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses), pharmacologic agents such as low-dose atropine eye drops (used off-label for myopia control in children), and optical interventions like orthokeratology (overnight rigid gas-permeable contact lenses) or specially designed multifocal soft contact lenses and spectacle lenses.

Eye patches marketed for myopia management—often containing herbal extracts, cooling gels, or purported “bioactive” ingredients—lack rigorous clinical validation. Regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), have not approved any topical patch product for the treatment or prevention of myopia progression. While some patches may provide transient symptomatic relief—such as reducing eye fatigue or dryness—their use does not alter the underlying structural or optical abnormalities responsible for myopia.

Patients, particularly parents of children with progressive myopia, should consult board-certified ophthalmologists or optometrists trained in pediatric vision care. Clinical decision-making should be guided by objective refraction, axial length measurements, and age-appropriate myopia control strategies supported by randomized controlled trials and long-term safety data. Relying on unproven devices may delay access to interventions with demonstrated efficacy and could inadvertently contribute to unmonitored progression.
