It constitutes approximately 20–30% of total ejaculate volume and provides essential nutrients—including fructose, zinc, citric acid, and enzymes like prostate-specific antigen (PSA)—that support sperm motility and viability. The release of prostatic fluid during sexual activity or nocturnal emissions is a normal physiological process and poses no inherent risk to health.
However, concerns sometimes arise about whether frequent or spontaneous release of prostatic fluid—such as through prolonged arousal without ejaculation (“seminal leakage” or “pre-ejaculatory fluid”)—can cause harm. Current urological evidence does not support this notion. There is no scientific basis for claims that routine prostatic fluid secretion depletes vital nutrients, weakens the immune system, or damages the prostate gland. The prostate continuously synthesizes and replenishes its secretions; it is not a finite reservoir subject to depletion.
That said, persistent or excessive discharge—especially if accompanied by pain, urinary symptoms (e.g., dysuria, frequency, urgency), blood in semen (hematospermia), or systemic signs like fever—may signal an underlying condition such as prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or infection. In such cases, evaluation by a urologist—including digital rectal examination, urinalysis, PSA testing, and, when indicated, transrectal ultrasound—is warranted.
In summary, the physiological release of prostatic fluid is neither harmful nor pathological. It reflects normal endocrine and autonomic function. Clinical attention should focus on symptom context—not the mere presence of prostatic fluid—when assessing urological health.
