Can Cassia Seed Pillows Be Washed?

Chinese herbal pillows filled with cassia seeds—commonly known as “jue ming zi” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)—are not designed for machine washing or submersion in water. Cassia seeds (Semen Cassiae) are dried, flattened legume seeds that retain therapeutic properties when used dry and intact. Exposure to moisture compromises their structural integrity: the seeds absorb water, swell, and may rupture or disintegrate, leading to clumping, mold growth, and loss of intended therapeutic effects such as mild cooling and eye-soothing properties.

Moreover, wet cassia seeds create an ideal environment for microbial proliferation, including fungi and bacteria, especially if not dried thoroughly—a significant hygiene concern given the pillow’s direct, prolonged contact with skin and hair. The fabric casing, often made from breathable cotton or linen, may also shrink, fade, or weaken after repeated wet cleaning.

For safe maintenance, TCM practitioners recommend regular surface cleaning with a soft, dry brush or vacuum attachment to remove dust and debris. Occasional sun-drying—no more than 2–3 hours in indirect sunlight—is acceptable to refresh the herbs and inhibit microbial growth, but direct, prolonged UV exposure should be avoided to preserve active compounds like anthraquinones and flavonoids. If odor or visible soiling persists, replacing the herbal filling entirely is strongly advised over attempting deep cleaning.
