While latex, polyurethane, and polyisoprene condoms significantly reduce the risk of transmission for HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis—particularly during vaginal or anal intercourse—their protective effect is partial for infections spread via skin-to-skin contact in areas not covered by the condom, such as human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), and syphilis in its early ulcerative stage.
Effectiveness depends heavily on proper use: correct application before any genital contact, avoiding oil-based lubricants with latex condoms, checking for expiration dates and physical damage, and using a new condom for each act of intercourse. Breakage, slippage, or inconsistent use substantially diminish protection. Additionally, condoms do not shield against STIs transmitted through oral-genital contact unless dental dams or specially designed oral barriers are employed.
Public health guidance emphasizes that condoms remain a cornerstone of STI prevention—but they are most effective as part of a comprehensive strategy that may include regular STI screening, vaccination (e.g., HPV and hepatitis B vaccines), mutual monogamy with an uninfected partner, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV where indicated.
